C-SPAN filmed my American Nations talk at Iowa State University earlier this fall, and now they've scheduled it for broadcast.
So, drop everything, cancel Christmas, and tune in to CSPAN-1 tomorrow, December 22, at 8 pm Eastern for an hour and thirteen minutes of riveting television. [Update, 12/27/15: C-SPAN rebroadcasts the talk Sunday, Jan. 3 at 4:45 pm Eastern.] [Update, 1/6/16: it also broadcast on at least two more occasions on Jan. 4 and 5.]
[Update, 12/23/15: the talk is now on CSPAN's homepage for asynchronous viewing.]
This was my most recent American Nations talk, but there are a whole host of events coming up this winter surrounding the publication of the book's sequel, American Character. I'll be announcing them here and, eventually, at my website's speaking tour page.

I watched the Dec. 22 broadcast, and it was indeed riveting. In a light-hearted yet loving way, you have nailed my family. We are descended from the Carolina planters, (English and Scots-Irish) and Dixie is beloved. My father was a blue-eyed Spaniard from northern NM where I grew up. I believe the same Spanish settlers were driven from NM during the 1680 Pueblo revolt, and some stayed down in El Paso and the Texas valley while the rest returned to reclaim their lands under the reconquest of Don Diego de Vargas. I think this could be pinpointed further by testing the cooking of the ladies in El Norte. You are right that Houston is the South. The ladies are southern belles, and do not travel or make any decisions on their own. Houstonians, black and white, are Baptist and Methodist.Sam Houston handpicked 200 Christian families to populate Houston, according to the history book of Union Baptist Association. Many came in from Tennessee and Kentucky.
ReplyDeleteThanks for your feedback. I think you'll enjoy the book. (So your father was descended from the early New Mexico settlers? Most excellent.)
DeleteMr. Woodard,
ReplyDeleteEnjoyed your lecture. A suggestion came to me when you displayed the dialect chart submitted by a blogger. Why don't you create a 'Dating' web site. You could gather tons of cultural data.

DeleteThanks much. Having (personally unidentifiable) geolocated data from major dating websites would indeed yield some interesting information. (Fixed a typo here - blogger made me "delete" rather than "edit" the post for some reason.)
