Just in time for the holidays, American Nations is now available as an audiobook edition from Gildan Media. Walter Dixon narrates.
If you don't see it at your local bookstore -- or, indeed, if your local bookstore ceased to exist -- you can find it at Amazon.com, or you can download it to Kindle, iPhone, iPod, and various other newfangled devices via Audible.com. (This being the 21st century, Audible is a subsidiary of Amazon; there is no escape.)
Some of the American Nations really pop out at you in this "Geography of Disability" map (http://www.dailyyonder.com/geography-disability/2011/11/29/3619). Specifically, Appalachia really stands out, as do Aroostook and Piscataquis counties in Maine, which makes you wonder whether they really belong to Great Appalachia. Also, I see some El Norte/Far West contrasts, although not strictly in accordance with the American Nations county-by-county map.
ReplyDeleteVery interesting map, Dave, thanks for posting. Appalachia indeed stands out. Would need to do some more study of the data to know if this is driven by political culture or an artifact of the occupational profile of the various counties. Food for thought, though.
